October 24, 2006 Eric Hols AIS class of 1976 eric.hols@marymount.edu Eric sends us this sad news of the passing of his father.
John A. "Jack" Hols, 73, died September 15, 2006, in Spokane, Washington, after a three year long battle with cancer. Born March 14, 1933, in Fort Madison, Iowa, he was the son of John and Edith Hols. He married Norma Thie in Burlington, Iowa. Mr. Hols was a 1950 graduate of Burlington High School. He attended Burlington Junior College and Drake University before graduating from the University of Iowa, where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism. After graduation, he served as publications assistant in the Public Relations Office of State College of Iowa (now Northern Iowa University) and later created and directed the Office of Public Information at Southeast Missouri State College. He spent the rest of his career as a foreign service officer in the United States Information Agency, with assignments to the U.S. Embassies in India, Vietnam, Ghana, Turkey and Canada. He retired from the U.S. Government in 1989 and moved to Spokane. In 1974, he was loaned to the Department of Commerce as Director of Public Affairs and Protocol for the U.S. Pavilion at "Expo 74" in Spokane. He served in the Army from 1954 to 1956 and was assigned to the White House Army Signal Agency. He worked in the White House and at Camp David. He was an avid fisherman and bicyclist. His survivors include his wife; his mother of Duluth, Minn.; one daughter, Laura Toepfer of Spokane; one son, Eric Hols of Ashburn, Va.; one brother, David Hols of St. Paul, Minn.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
